welcome

Welcome to Dulia et Latria, an online journal dedicated to exploring all aspects of dulia and latria within the Christian faith.  In his late 14th century Tractatus de Mandatis Divinis, John Wycliffe, writing against iconic idolatry within the Catholic church, defined dulia as the reverence men and women owe to each other and latria as the reverence a man or woman owes only to God.  He was interested in developing a taxonomy for and an analysis of duties involved in the horizontal relationship between created beings themselves and the vertical relationship between the created and the creator, and so are we.  With our journal we wish to showcase current and constructive writing dealing with the manifestations and interconnections of dulia and latria in the realm of the home, the academy, the church, the workplace, the arts, the community, and the government.

We hope that you acquaint yourself with our site and that you read a few of the articles.  If you feel that some of your own work could contribute to our ongoing investigation, do not hesitate to contact us.  We ask only that you follow the guidelines listed on our editorial policy page.  Ph.D. students in philosophy, religion, literature, or other humanities are especially encouraged to submit work.

Dulia et Latria is committed to an open-access policy in its publishing. Electronic avenues are the best way as yet to allow this free access to as many people as possible, in as convenient a way as possible. However, in order to ensure the archival durability of soft media, thirty printed, hardbound copies of each volume will be distributed gratis to thirty academic libraries across the United States on the condition that the volumes be allowed to circulate via interlibrary loan and WorldCat. In addition to this, two copies will be deposited in the Library of Congress to facilitate legal copyright protection.
